Solid vs stranded, UTP vs FTP
Solid conductor cable is used for fixed backbone and horizontal runs terminated at patch panels and outlets; stranded cable is more flexible and used for patch leads. Choose UTP (unshielded) for standard installations, or FTP / shielded where cables run near sources of electrical interference. LSZH / LSOH jackets are recommended in public and enclosed spaces for low smoke and zero halogen in a fire.

Yes. Cat5e supports Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T) at up to 100 metres, as well as Fast Ethernet and voice. It is a dependable, cost-effective choice for most office and data networks.
What is the difference between UTP and FTP Cat5e?+
UTP (unshielded twisted pair) suits standard installations. FTP/shielded cable adds a foil screen to reject electrical interference and is used where cables run close to power lines, motors or other noise sources.
Solid or stranded Cat5e — which do I need?+
Use solid-conductor cable for fixed backbone and horizontal runs terminated at patch panels and outlets. Use stranded cable for patch leads, where flexibility and repeated bending matter.
What does LSZH / LSOH mean?+
Low Smoke Zero Halogen (also written LSOH) jackets emit little smoke and no halogen gases when exposed to fire, so they are recommended for public buildings and enclosed spaces such as risers and plenums.
What is the maximum length for a Cat5e cable run?+
The maximum recommended channel length is 100 metres — up to 90 metres of solid horizontal cable plus up to 10 metres of patch leads at each end.
